Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
