Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
