What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
