Two Separate Cuba-Headed Relief Vessels Listed Missing following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of unlocated boats loaded with aid cargo traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Military Search Operations Deployed
Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to find the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of nine sailors, according to a navy statement.
The vessels had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
Context of Aid to the Island
The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through multiple power outages across the country.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"We are collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Previous Humanitarian Mission
Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.
That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and food.
Larger Geopolitical Context
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k operations called off in Cuba because of power shortages.
Political measures have increased lately, with remarks from various leaders emphasizing the delicate state of bilateral relations.
Reacting to certain statements, a senior Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to locate the vessels and secure the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
