This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
