The people of Israel commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
People have assembled across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the plan.
A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies provision
- Post-war governance of the region
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will be secure."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do any agreement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the western district, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening falls, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional fatalities had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the southern area, health workers reported.
