The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Audience Reaction

One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.

“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
