Scream Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
