Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He battled the legal system and the law prevailed.
Two months following getting a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “annihilate” the nation's democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems jail-bound.
Anticipated Incarceration
The adjudicated plotter – who had been under house arrest in his estate while a series of judicial steps and challenges play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, during mounting rumors that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.
Previous Comments on Prisoners
During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited minimal mercy for the country's inmates.
“What’s the need to provide those lowlifes a easy time?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”
Incarceration Facility Discussion
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, a group of four this week toured the complex in an apparent attempt to prevent the supreme court from sending him there.
Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the last election race – implied it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing four dozen detainees: “That’s virtually one meter squared per inmate.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the horrible food,” added the senator.
Supporters Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the sole person speaking out prior to the ex-leader's anticipated imprisonment.
Authoring in a prominent daily, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its history”.
“It is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” he stated.
Varied General Response
That may be true given the considerable following Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. However his anticipated jailing has also warmed the hearts of numerous other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to prevent his successor from becoming president – and also scheming to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, said: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to obtain proper care – but dignified treatment behind bars. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the severe conditions of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their rights. “Just now has the extreme right – which has always asserted that human rights were not for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a penitentiary to learn what circumstances are really like,” he stated.
“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, insulting handling”.
Potential Jail Facilities
In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about thousands of inmates, his expected location seems to be a close prison for police officers and other “particular” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are much more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the spectacular presidential palace, around 12 miles away.
According to sources, the cell Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and includes a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter terrace. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a TV and also a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information suggested.
Political Reactions
He denounced the speculated plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his outcome in the {
