Following a week of torrential rains that led to inundation across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now confronting unseasonably warm temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Readings
During the day Friday, the mercury soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, per data from meteorologists. This easily surpasses the old record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on official maps for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Forecasters issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their recommendations featured:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat comes on the heels of a intense winter storm that battered the region recently. That storm delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, leading to flash flood warnings for many residents.
Sadly, the severe weather also caused a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
The outlook suggests cooler conditions will arrive. The heat were forecast to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by overnight.
Other locales that experienced the 90-degree mark included Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were forecast to see the high 80s.
Over Saturday and Sunday, central Los Angeles can anticipate temperatures in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the week ahead.
