Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to appear with the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how vital this election is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
