At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
